Endless Carbon Fiber

Endless Carbon Fiber

Spun Bench is a 35-meter long figure-8 of woven carbon fiber composite. It was created by Danish designer Mathias Bengtsson in 2012 at the behest of the Industry Gallery in Washington D.C. The large figure-8 is actually a combination of 12 of Bengtsson’s Spun benches (one of several Spun furniture pieces he designed) which he first made in 2008.

The entire figure-8 weighs only 11 pounds. Because of the woven structure, the tubular surface described by the weave is only 20% carbon fiber composite – the rest is negative space. It is made by a low-cost industrial fiber spinning technique, although the fiber itself is still an expensive commodity. It was said to cost about $45,000 a copy.
