From the atrium roof of an office building three 24 m high GRP columns of 4 mm GFRP laminate are suspended. Approval documents, structural analysis and material tests were provided by ITKE. As you can see by the photos below, the columns are hollow, with intermittent steel braces. The GFRP was light enough to install the columns in large sections that were craned in. The cavity also allowed for an installer to verify the seams from the interior to ensure perfect alignment. The end result is seamless and commands attention from anyone in this expansive interior space.
